Ten Wairarapa residents have helped the police catch seven youths who fled from a stolen car on Tuesday.

In a statement, police said they followed the car, which was travelling north on State Highway 2, stopping it with roadspikes just outside Greytown.

The seven young people fled in different directions but were taken into custody after the police and members of the public tracked them through several private properties.

Police said all of the offenders have been referred to Youth Aid.

Meanwhile, the driver is set to appear in Youth Court facing driving charges.

Wairarapa Area Commander, Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson said the presence of unrestrained passengers in the vehicle made the incident particularly dangerous.

"One of the occupants in the stolen car was unrestrained in the front passenger footwell. This is extremely concerning and a situation where there could have been a more serious outcome including serious injury or death," Thomson said.

Police are appealing for information from anyone who may have witnessed or has video footage of the incident.

Anyone with relevant information is urged to contact Police on 105 or online using Update My Report referencing file number 221108/3644.
