Two people have died in overnight crashes - one in Stoke, Nelson, and the other near Takapau in Hawke's Bay.
Emergency services were called to Whakatu Drive, Stoke, about 1.30am where a person had died at the scene of the crash.
The expressway between Quarantine Road and the Richmond Deviation was closed for several hours as the Serious Crash Unit investigated.
In Hawke's Bay, a person died in a crash on State Highway 2 near Takapau.
Police said it appeared a single vehicle collided with a power pole about 12.10am.
Meanwhile, emergency services have been responding to a serious crash on Tauhei Road in Waikato.
Police were notified of the single-vehicle crash at 9.25am.
Initial indications suggested one person has suffered serious injuries.
The road has been closed and diversions will be in place.
Motorists have been asked to avoid the area.
Enquiries into the circumstances of the crash have begun.
