Police are treating the discovery of a body in Rotorua's Ōhinemutu as unexplained.
They say it was found on Lake Road, shortly after 1am on Sunday.
Police said they would like to hear from anyone who may have information that could help with the investigation.
Specifically, they were after sightings of a person in the Lake Road area near Rotorua Hospital between 10pm on Saturday and 1am.
People with information were asked to call 105 and quote file number 230507/9750.
Reports could also be made online.
