A boil water notice has been issued for residents of the Otago town of Luggate.

The Queenstown Lakes District Council issued the precautionary warning for properties on the Luggate township water supply after contractors detected a fault in its system.

The council's infrastructure operations manager Simon Mason said the chlorine dosing fault was now being repaired but residents and businesses should boil water as a precaution.

Water used for the following purposes should be boiled for at least one minute, the council advised:

  • Drinking water - including cold beverages and ice-making
  • Food preparation - including washing uncooked foods such as salad, vegetables, and fruit
  • Preparing baby formula
  • Washing food utensils
  • Brushing teeth
  • Pets

Mason said further advice would be issued as the situation changed.
