Police warn locals to watch for letterbox theft in Whakatāne area

A mail thief is causing strife in small towns near Whakatāne.

Police said they were dealing with numerous reports of deliveries being taken from letterboxes in Awakaponga, Manawahe, Otakiri, and Onepu.

Mail has been found dumped on the side of the road or in other letterboxes in Te Teko, a short drive from Whakatāne.

Senior constable Wayne Lawrence said the mindless offending was causing emotional and financial distress.

Police advise people to to check their letterboxes regularly and to report any suspicious behaviour.
