A man, 47, who is a visitor from overseas, has admitted careless driving charges that caused a fatal crash in inland Canterbury last weekend.

Susan Johnson was killed in the two-vehicle crash at Castle Hill, along State Highway 73's West Coast Road on 14 January.

Five others, including the woman's husband Ian Johnson, were injured in the collision shortly before 5pm that afternoon.

Injuries initially ranged from minor to serious.

Police laid two charges against the man last week, comprising of operating a vehicle carelessly causing death and operating a vehicle carelessly causing injury.

He pleaded guilty to both charges when he appeared in the Christchurch District Court on Monday, accompanied by an interpreter.

Judge Katie Elkin granted the man interim name suppression after the defence argued the situation remained "raw" and he was yet to reveal the situation to extended family and his employer back in his home country.

Court documents revealed the man lived overseas, but the judge extended suppression conditions to his home country and residence.

Judge Elkin granted the man bail, on the proviso he does not drive a vehicle, that he surrendered his passport and that he did not apply for any travel documents.

The man will be sentenced on 15 February.
