A man arrested after an extended stand-off with armed police is scheduled to appear in court.

On Tuesday, a cordon on High Street in Avalon was put in place from 9.30am when a man with a firearm was seen in the area.

Officers entered a house where the 25-year-old was hiding and arrested him at around 8pm.

Schools nearby were put into lockdown throughout the morning, and some into the afternoon, as a precaution.

Taitā resident Josh Bryant told RNZ police had told him not to leave his home until the stand-off was over.

He said the police presence in the suburb had been huge.

Inspector Nick Thom said police recognised the stress the operation placed on the community and thanked it for "bearing with us".

"Police recognise how unsettling this has been - particularly for the younger members of our community and their parents when schools went into lockdown. Local police staff will be out in the community in the next days offering reassurance to those affected."

Police have not said what charges the man faced.
