Police are conducting a scene examination after a person died of self-inflicted injuries at an Auckland restaurant, after committing an assault there.
As a result, bus routes are being diverted around the cordoned-off area.
Police and ambulance staff responded to reports of an assault at a restaurant on Clyde Road in Browns Bay just before 6pm on Thursday.
The victim, the owner of Neco Sushi, was taken to Auckland Hospital with serious injuries.
She was in a stable condition on Friday morning, police said.
The offender died of a self-inflicted injury at the scene.
Police said they were not seeking anyone else in relation to the attack and support was being provided to those affected by the traumatic incident.
"Police believe this is an isolated incident where the victim and offender were known to each other," police said in a statement.
"The road remains blocked off while police continue with the scene examination, we would like to thank the public for their cooperation while this is underway.
"An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances."
Town centre manager Kim Murdoch said she was saddened to hear of the assault.
Browns Bay was a tight-knit community and the business association's thoughts were with the restaurant owner and her family, she said.
