Watch: Prime Minister Christopher Luxon speaks at post-Cabinet conference

4:20 pm on 7 February 2024

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon says the government is introducing further moves to restore law and order and personal responsibility.

Speaking to media after Wednesday's post-Cabinet meeting media briefing, Luxon said the government had begun the legislative process for scrapping funding of Section 27 cultural reports for offenders, and "in addition we have scrapped Labour's target for reducing prison population by 30 percent".

It comes after Waitangi Day where Luxon was criticised for using parts of the same speech at the Treaty Grounds as he did last year.

Tens of thousands of people were in Waitangi on Tuesday with a strong message of Toitū Te Tiriti.

Luxon said his use of the same speech was deliberate.

"I want repetition and consistency, particularly when there's a lot of misinformation and misunderstanding about our support for the Treaty."
