Central Stags to lift the Plunket Shield

The Central Stags have won the Plunket Shield for the tenth time after the Wellington Firebirds lost to Auckland Aces today.

The Stags are facing a target of 519 runs against the Northern Districts to win at Nelson Park, but regardless of the result will receive the Plunket Shield trophy.

Their first championship win since 2013 was only confirmed once the Wellington Firebirds slipped to a 120-run defeat to the Auckland Aces at the Outer Oval in Eden Park today.

The Central Stags have displayed an impressive performance in first-class cricket

with three of their batsmen Greg Hay, Jesse Ryder and Will Young among the top ten run-earners in the tournament and left-arm spinner Ajaz Patel finished as the leading wicket-taker.

Leading up to their match against Northern Districts, the Stags are undefeated with six wins and three draws.

The Stags return to the pitch for the final day tomorrow against Northern Districts on 111 for three needing 408 runs to win.
