Elizabeth Kerr says Berio's "use of theatricality and virtuosity, the frequent focus on text, poetry and folk material and the sheer expressiveness of his music suggest that his Italian nationality and heritage were never far away."

Listen to hear a range of Berio's works, including those which show the rapport between the composer and singer Cathy Beberian, his muse both before and after their marriage.
