Polish-born Mieczyslaw Weinberg (1919-1996) later emigrated to Russia where his friend Shostakovich regarded him as one of the outstanding composers of the time. Like Shostakovich, Weinberg was criticised as part of the campaign against so-called 'Formalism' in Soviet art and he received his share of warnings. His Cello Concerto composed in 1948 waited nine years for its first performance by Mstislav Rostropovich and the Moscow Philharmonia.

It's performed here by Inbal Megiddo with the New Zealand School of Music Orchestra, conducted by Martin Riseley
