Composer and choral conductor David Hamilton has been commissioned by major instrumental groups and choirs throughout New Zealand. His music is particularly popular with school choirs. Until 2001, Hamilton was Head of Music at Epsom Girls Grammar School (Auckland), and he is currently the  Deputy Music Director of Auckland Choral. His works have been performed, published and recorded in a number of places around the world, with commissions from choirs in Japan, England, USA and Finland.

And Music Shall Untune the Sky was commissioned by the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra for the 1988 Festival Proms series. The work had its origins in a piece Hamilton wrote for the 1986 Waikato Secondary Schools Music Festival. And Music Shall Untune the Sky draws on two sources: ‘The Tempest’ (Shakespeare) and ‘A Song for St Cecilia’s Day’ (John Dryden).
