Dmitrii Makarenko was charged in Florida in 2017 with conspiring and attempting to export defense articles without a license and money laundering.

Mr Makarenko, who last year was declared a fugitive, was taken into custody by the FBI after he arrived with family in Saipan.

Following his arrest, the Northern Marianas Chief Judge Ramona V. Manglona granted a motion to transfer him to Florida.

The news agency TASS quoted the Russian embassy in Washington as saying he is now being held in Honolulu.

In June, Mr Makarenko's co-defendant in the case Vladimir Nevidomy, who lived in Florida, was sentenced in Miami to 26 months in prison.

The Russian news site The Bell said Mr Makarenko's main business interests were in real estate, and next month he was due to open the largest shopping mall in Vladivostok.
