A passenger who was on board the Air Niugini plane that crash landed into the sea in Federated States of Micronesia on Friday says he believes pilot error is to blame.

The Boeing 737 crashed into the sea about 200 metres short of the runway at Chuuk on Friday.

One person died, but 47 other crew and passengers were rescued when an armada of locals' boats, and a US Navy crew who happened to be there, rushed out to collect them.

One of those passengers was Bill Jaynes, who is the editor of the Kaselehlie Press, a local newspaper.

He told Jamie Tahana that on the plane's descent, the weather was clear, there were no strange noises, or any alarms or warnings until there was a giant thud.
