Fears for child detainees on Nauru as doctors ordered to leave

From , 4:02 pm on 8 October 2018

New Zealand paediatricians say they're concerned for the welfare of children detained on Nauru after the scrapping of a mental health support service.

The humanitarian organisation Doctors Without Borders has been ordered to leave the island and told its free services are no longer required.

About 900 refugees are detained in Nauru indefinitely at the behest of Australia - including about 100 children.

The president of New Zealand's Paediatric Society, Tim Jellyman, told Jessie Chiang that children will be vulnerable without the service.
