Tributes have been flowing from across the Pacific today after Tonga's prime minister, 'Akilisi Pohiva, died aged 78.

Before becoming prime minister in 2014, Mr Pohiva spent decades as the country's foremost democracy activist, fighting against the monarchy.

Jamie Tahana looks back on his life.

Born in Ha'apai in 1941, 'Akilisi Pohiva started his career as a school teacher, before becoming involved in a growing democracy movement in the 1970s.

He became the face of the movement and a persistent thorn in the government's side.

In 1992, Mr Pohiva told RNZ that change would eventually come to Tonga.
