Global leaders are being urged to commit to concrete actions to protect the world's oceans at the seventh 'Our Ocean' Conference which opens in Palau this week.

The meeting which is being co-hosted by Palau and the United States is billed as an important opportunity for countries, civil society and industry to commit to protect the ocean.

The US Ambassador to Palau, John Hennessey-Niland, says there are a lot of 'firsts' in this conference.

Waves of the Pacific Ocean break against jagged rocks on the shoreline of New Zealand. Off shore over the blue-green waters of the Pacific Ocean stand several small, rocky islands.
