Why are there so many seal statues in suburban Aotearoa?

There's been a quirky observation that New Zealand has an unusual and unexplained obsession with statues of seals.

We put them on display in our gardens. They are usually concrete. Sometimes they double as a fountain, others balance a ball on their nose.

And for 6 years, on and off, Amy Wheeler has been documenting them on Instagram, trying to understand why we love them so much. She talks to Jesse about what she's uncovered so far.
