Finishing touches to $1.4bn Auckland Waterview Connection

The finishing touches are going on the two longest road tunnels in the country before they open in four months as part of Auckland's $1.4 billion Waterview Connection.

The 2.4km-long twin tunnels are covered in 140,000 square metres of paint and have 4000 lights, and 400km of cabling and wiring.

More than 10,000 people have worked at least 10 million hours on the project.

New Zealand Transport Agency spokesman Brett Gliddon calls it a one-in-a-lifetime project and says at peak time 15,000 vehicles will travel on the six lanes of the two tunnels.
