Lord of the Rings Amazon series to be made in Auckland

Hundreds of jobs, billions of dollars, and one ring to rule them all - Lord of the Rings is coming back home.

Tech-giant Amazon has announced it'll film a TV series here, based in Auckland, set in an earlier time period than the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit.

The film industry is having a long-expected party, saying it will provide countless jobs for possibly the better part of a decade.

It's been called the golden age of New Zealand film and TV, with major companies like Netflix and Amazon producing vast amounts of content with cash to burn.

The budget is under tight wraps, but to sweeten the deal Amazon could get hundreds of millions of dollars in taxpayer-funded rebates.

We sent Jordan Bond on an unexpected journey.
