Winston Peters' pledge to help public, local media

The media's least likely ally - Winston Peters - has put a stake in the ground on the future of public broadcasting and NZME's proposal to buy its news rival, Stuff.

In a speech at Parliament on Thursday, the New Zealand First leader went into bat for public broadcasting, saying that the Coalition agreed RNZ and TVNZ's future needs to be protected.

Mr Peters has also thrown his party's support behind a renewed bid from NZME - a decision that will ultimately fall to the Commerce Commission.
