Why did busy Waikanae supermarket apply for Covid-19 wage subsidy?

From Checkpoint, 5:25 pm on 8 April 2020

Foodstuffs is refusing to say why its New World Waikanae store applied for $140,000 in wage subsidies despite appearing busier than ever.

On Tuesday it announced that stores that had applied had withdrawn their applications, and the two that had been paid out would pay the government money back.

But despite Checkpoint's repeated requests for interviews, Foodstuffs nor its franchisees would explain why its stores had applied in the first place.

As Checkpoint's Logan Church and cameraman Dom Thomas found out, it has left the store's customers angry and confused.
