Kieran McAnulty pushes bill to scrap Easter alcohol sale limits

From Checkpoint, 6:18 pm on 7 April 2021

A member's bill that would remove alcohol sale restrictions over Easter, on Christmas Day and Anzac Day is gaining momentum, with a push to use a new rule to get it before Parliament.

Labour's Kieran McAnulty's bill would change the law so licensed businesses already allowed to open on those day could sell alcohol.

Under a new standing order a member's bill can go straight to the top of the order paper if it has the backing of at least 61 MPs - who are not ministers.

Previously a bill had to be pulled from the ballot, but that could be bypassed under the new rule.

Kieran McAnulty explained his reasoning for the law change to reporters at Parliament.
