Ukrainians in NZ are appealing for the government to grant war refugees and family members immediate safe haven in NZ.

The government today announced an automatic 12 month visa extension for Ukrainians living in NZ whose rights to stay here are due to expire by the end of the year.

But no word yet on whether it will take in war refugees or offer special family reunification visas.

Ukranian Olga Viazenko is living in Dunedin.

Her stepsons are stuck in an increasingly dangerous Kyiv, but her mother and mother-in-law have managed to make it across the border.
