Auckland bakery's year-round hot cross buns prove popular

Hot cross buns are usually reserved for Easter, but one Auckland bakery had such high demand for their custom-made creations, they now sell them year-round.

Reporter Louise Ternouth and camera operator Marika Khabazi pay Mt Eden's NZ BAKERY a visit.

Shaminder, the man behind the fruity buns, has been a baker for 28 years but only opened NZ BAKERY last year.

He did some research on hot-cross buns before creating his own recipe.

When Easter was over and customers kept begging Shaminder to keep making the buns, he says he just kept going.

There's no specific secret to his popular buns, Shaminder says, but spice levels, mixing time, dough resting time and baking temperature all play a role.

As the sole baker, he makes 240 buns a day by himself - and every day they sell out.

"I wake up at 330 in the morning every day. I'm finishing maybe 1:30, 2 o'clock, sometimes 3 o'clock."
