Auckland mum frustrated over school's stance on boys' earrings

From Checkpoint, 5:39 pm on 4 November 2022

An Auckland mum fighting what she believes is a "sexist" school uniform policy around earings is frustrated by the slow pace of change.

That's despite guidelines from the Human Rights Commission saying schools could fall foul of the law if they treat students differently based on gender.

Jane Mathews' son, who goes to Mount Albert Grammar, was told off for wearing an ear stud even though girls at the school are allowed to wear them.

So Jane approached the school in April and wrote to the board of trustees requesting a rule change.

Jane Matthews talks to Lisa Owen.
