Each week, Culture 101 puts the spotlight on a different region to get the latest on the arts and culture scene. This week we’re at Waitangi.
The politics will make the headlines but what doesn’t get as much coverage is the festival from 3-6 February. There’s music, kapa haka, arts and craft stalls, food, games for children and various performances. This year, Ladi6, DJ Venom and The Harmonic Resonators are among the main acts.
Toi Iti is accompanying father, activist, artist, actor and social worker, Tame Iti (Ngāi Tūhoe) to Waitangi, working with him on a performance art piece. Iti is asking the people to look at Aotearoa as a blank canvas; a chance to create something new. He’s welcoming people to join him at Waitangi and bring a Hake Atea - a white flag with nothing on it as a symbol of the blank canvas. Almost 1000 people have already signed up.
