Every week Culture 101 speaks to a creative correspondent to gauge the cultural pulse of Aotearoa’s regions.

This week, we’re in Kaikoura with writer, poet, researcher and museum curator, Te Awhina Rangimarie Arahanga.

Kaikoura, known for its beautiful light, has been an inspiration for many photographers. The landscape and panorama of the mountains and the sea along with unique cloud formations has given Kaikoura its reputation among artists.

Arahanga has written two books, Darkness in Light (2014) and most recently, Tsunami with Mushrooms (2024), a collection of poems and stories. It also features artworks by friends from her Kaikoura community.

Arahanga has also collaborated with three other artists, Susie Baker, Dan Kerins and Matt Moriarty to create a visual visitors book. Each artist hails from a different part of the globe and each one expresses and shares their version of Kaikoura through art and images.

Te Awhina Rangimarie Arahanga joins Perlina Lau on Culture 101.
