Pike River families get closer to loved men but feel empty

From First Up, 5:12 am on 4 October 2019

It's been almost 10 years since families lost their loved ones at the tragic Pike River mine disaster and yesterday, as they stood closer than they've ever been before to where the victims died, they described feeling empty and numb. About 25 family members took turns to travel the dark, wet 170 metre rock tunnel to where the mine was sealed shortly after the disaster that killed 29 men. Barbara and Brian Nieper lost their son Kane who was just 33 years old when he died at Pike River - a husband and father with a young family. They told reporter Rowan Quinn it was an emotional milestone to get closer to their son.
