Gisborne principal explains high school leaver rate

Seven-and-a-half thousand teenagers left school without a qualification last year. The figure represents 12 percent of 2019's school leavers, that's one percentage point up from the previous year. In the Gisborne region the rate was 19 percent, the highest of any area. Andrew Turner from Gisborne Boys High School told our Education correspondent, John Gerritsen, job opportunities are a major factor behind the statistic.
