From First Up, 5:52 am on 14 March 2022

Twenty-two people with Covid-19 have died in New Zealand in the past three days - that's nearly a 5th of the country's total death toll since the virus arrived here more than two years ago. We've currently got 896 people in hospital, including 18 in ICU, out of the 197-thousand active cases in the community. So while the number of people dying with Covid is a small percentage of those who test positive, the huge volume of people catching the virus at the moment has experts warning to brace for "collective grief" over the coming weeks. Joining Nathan Rarere is University of Otago epidemiologist Professor Michael Baker.
