Dozens of gym goers in South Auckland are saddened to hear the council wants to remove a beloved cat from the Manurewa Pools and Leisure Centre.

MPAL has lived at the centre for five years and has become a favourite to many.

Now members have launched the #savempal movement and petition. One of the founders Jayde Matai tells Nathan Rarere what they're hoping for.

Sam Sinton, Auckland Council’s Leisure Network Services Manager, said in a statement that MPAL, the cat, has welcomed many visitors to the Manurewa Pool and Leisure Centre since she adopted the staff and centre as her home.

"She has become a much-loved friend to many of our centre visitors. However, we are aware that some of our valued customers may not be able to tolerate cats.

"Our pools and leisure centres belong to everyone to enjoy equally. In the 2022/2023 financial year, we welcomed over 4.1 million visitors to our pool and leisure centres, including 1.6 million pool visitors.

"Our centres provide the chance to connect and pursue a wide range of recreational activities and it is important for everyone to be able to access these services.

"As a result, we are considering alternatives for MPAL – including the possibility of finding a new suitable home. We will be carefully managing any change to ensure her welfare remains a top priority."
