Explained: TikTok and the potential US ban

The US House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed a measure to force TikTok to split from its owner ByteDance or face a national ban. Beijing's influence on the app has concerned US lawmakers for a long while. But TikTok says its data or algorithms cannot be accessed or manipulated by the Chinese government. Meanwhile, content creators say a ban in the US would threaten their livelihoods. To get to the bottom of all this, I asked RNZ explainer editor Katie Kenny what led to this?
