Henare Kingi: Iconic Maori broadcaster

From Māpuna, 12:30 pm on 1 April 2023

Henare Kingi (Ngapuhi) spent 25 years as an announcer at Wellington's Te Upoko o Te Ika, the first Maori radio station, from its founding days in the early 1980s. Over those decades, he became a broadcasting legend and icon which many in Maori broadcasting looked to, listened to, and aspired to. With two microphones and a tray load of pies, Mapuna went to misty Wainuiomata to interview the 88-year-old in his whare. Matua Henare talks about his life, te reo, and broadcast aspirations.
