Frustration after inaction from Children's Minister

From Midday Report, 12:18 pm on 4 June 2020

The lead of the Māori review into Oranga Tamariki says she is appalled the Children's Minister, Tracey Martin, has said she was never asked to do anything with the report.

The Māori-led inquiry into Oranga Tamariki, commissioned by Whanau Ora, was released earlier this year, after the agency tried to take a newborn baby from a Hawke's Bay mother in 2019.

At the Social Services and Community select committee yesterday, Ms Martin was asked what work had been done since the inquiry report was released.

The Minister said she was told by Dame Naida Glavish the inquiry wasn't undertaken for her, and she wasn't required to respond to it in any way.

Dame Naida Glavish, who chaired the governance group overseeing the Māori-led review, spoke to Māni Dunlop about the Minister's comments.
