New volcano warning system welcomed by Whakaari victim's family

From Midday Report, 12:45 pm on 20 July 2020

The brother of a man who was killed in the Whakaari White Island eruption has welcomed the news that a new volcano warning system has been developed by acientists at Auckland University.

The system – which would have alerted people to the Whakaari/White Island eruption 16 hours before it happened – is ready to be put to use.

Researchers have identified a four-hour burst of seismic energy before four out of the five eruptions at Whakaari in the past decade - which will allow them to anticipate future eruptions.

Māni Dunlop spoke to Mark Inman, whose brother Hayden Marshall-Inman was killed in the December eruption.
