IPCA finds police wrong to pursue fleeing Christchurch car

From Midday Report, 12:11 pm on 15 October 2020

The Independent Police Conduct Authority has found that the police were not justified in carrying out a pursuit which led to the death of an innocent motorist in Christchurch.

Nurse Kenneth McCaul, who was 64, was killed when a Toyota being chased by the police smashed into his Hyundai, as he was heading to work just before 4 in the morning in October last year.

Eighteen-year-old Jayden Breakwell, who was driving the fleeing vehicle, passed through eight red lights before the fatal crash.
