Lorde returns to centre stage with Green Light

From Morning Report, 8:57 am on 3 March 2017

World chart-topping New Zealand musician Lorde has released the first single from her second album this morning. Yadana Saw from RNZ Music says Lorde's new single 'Green Light' is "an assured step."

"She sings ‘I hear sounds in my mind, brand new sounds in my mind’ and you can hear those elements in 'Green Light’. The track is co-produced by Jack Antonoff (fun) and Frank Dukes (Drake), so a departure from Joel Little on this track (who produced her debut album Pure Heroine). You can hear the plinking of dance keys – the ones you find on club tunes that people much older than her would have ecstatically danced to in their twenties.

It’s still on theme for where you’d imagine Lorde’s hordes to be now. Looking back, ‘Royals’ told the story of slightly disaffected, on-the-edge teenagers who are aren’t part of what is happening. On ‘Green Light’ there is a building maturity of young people who are beginning to make decisions in their life, experiencing good and bad on their adventure of growing up."

The 20-year-old popstar and songwriter, whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor, topped charts around the world in 2013 with her single 'Royals'.

She went on to win multiple international music awards awards including two Grammys, one for Song of the Year.

In January it was announced she would be one of the major acts at the 2017 US Coachella Festival, which fuelled speculation she had new material to come, and she has been teasing fans in recent days with cryptic tweets.
