Drone near Auckland Airport grounds 20 planes

From Morning Report, 6:13 am on 7 March 2018

The Airline Pilots' Association is criticising New Zealand's lack of regulation on drones, after one flying near Auckland Airport yesterday forced 20 aircraft to be diverted. Airport operations were stopped for half an hour just after midday, affecting international and domestic flights. The association's president Tim Robinson says while the drone's operator had clearly breached Civil Aviation rules by flying in an airspace without clearance, they would probably walk away scot free. He told RNZ reporter Emma Hatton it should be compulsory to register drones so the Civil Aviation Authority can track owners.
