Invercargill Deputy Mayor Nobby Clark fed up with job

Now to Invercargill, where Mayor Sir Tim Shadbolt's driver's licence has created the latest flashpoint for ructions around the council table.

Sir Tim's licence has been suspended - that's been established.

What isn't known is why. Deputy mayor Nobby Clark has told Sir Tim to tell the public what's going on, so the matter can be put to bed.

Instead, Sir Tim referred Clark to his lawyer and on the Mayor's Facebook page he posted a news story about the matter, suggesting it was his - quote - most current "Et tu Brute" moment.

Nobby Clark is the third deputy mayor of the city in as many years, after his predecessor, Toni Biddle, stepped down in October citing the toxic culture around the council table.

Her predecessor, Rebecca Amundsen, wasn't chosen for the role following 2019's elections after she stood against him for mayor.

An independent review, released last year, found most of the council's tensions stemmed from a leadership void, with Sir Tim increasingly unable to carry out duties, which the mayor dismissed immediately - saying he was a scapegoat.

Clark told Otago-Southland reporter Timothy Brown he's finished with the role after next year's election.
