Covid-19: Wellington's mayor wants occupation to end

From Morning Report, 6:48 am on 21 February 2022

As an illegal occupation in Wellington of about 1000 people hits day 14, the city's mayor is getting angry about the disruption it's causing.

The police say they are engaging with key protest leaders in good faith to resolve issues.

On the streets, officers are taking a zero-tolerance approach to any abuse, intimidation or violence against members of the public.

They're increasing reassurance patrols in the area, including around schools and businesses.

But the combined protest groups are painting a picture of a highly volatile situation within the disparate and largely leaderless crowd, saying although it's been peaceful so far "the mood of many highly disaffected protestors would improve dramatically were the police to agree to drop all charges".
