Court of Appeal hearing begins on David Tamihere murder conviction

From Morning Report, 8:40 am on 28 November 2023

A Court of Appeal hearing begins today to determine whether David Tamihere's double murder conviction may have amounted to a miscarriage of justice.

Tamihere served 20 years in jail after being found guilty of murdering Swedish tourists Urban Hoglin and Heidi Paakkonen in Coromandel in 1989.

He's always maintained his innocence, and his attempts to appeal the case in the early '90s were rejected.

Tuesday's hearing will determine whether key elements of the Crown case, which have since been proven wrong, undermines the safety of the conviction.

Journalist Donna Chisholm has followed this case for years and has recently been working with the defence team as an investigator.

Chisholm spoke to Ingrid Hipkiss.
