US Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell to step down

From Morning Report, 6:14 am on 1 March 2024

On Thursday we heard the announcement that US Senate Republican leader, Mitch McConnell was to step down from that role in November.

He's held the role for almost two decades and is the longest-serving Senate leader in US history.

Over the last few years, questions had been raised about McConnell's ability to carry out his role, with specific reference to his age.

McConnell is 82 and began his Capitol Hill career when Reagan was in the White House.

But with President Joe Biden aged 81 and presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump turning 78 this year, how old is too old to hold such power?
