Large parts of the country are in for a wet and windy Monday, some areas could be hit by thunderstorms and gales.

A band of rain has already set in Southland and inland Otago and it's moving up the country through Westland, as well as the lower and central North Island.

Heavy rain warnings are in place for Mount Taranaki and the Tararua Ranges.

Strong wind warning and watches are in place for the Canterbury High Country, Marlborough, and the Wairarapa.

Snow could also settle to around one thousand metres over Fiordland and the Otago ranges on Monday.
