Nelson Māori wait for decision in long property dispute

From Morning Report, 8:25 am on 4 March 2024

As Māori in Nelson await a decision in the country's longest-running property dispute, the Wakatū Incorporation is working to re-connect with thousands of descendants of the 300 customary landowners identified by the Native Land Court in 1892.

The Supreme Court ruled in 2017 that the Crown should have upheld their agreement to reserve one-tenth of the land in Nelson for Māori.

A ten-week trial in the High Court was held last year to determine the extent of the breaches and the remedies, with a decision expected in the coming months.
