Revenue Minister on mortgage tax deductions for landlords

From Morning Report, 7:10 am on 11 March 2024

From April 1 landlords will once again be able to claim tax deductions for interest on residential investment properties.

In effect, this means interest expenses are offset against taxes paid on rental income.

The NZ Property Investors Federation says this brings rental property owners in line with the normal way that businesses operate.

Speaking to media yesterday, Associate Minister of Finance David Seymour said the change will simplify the tax code and - hopefully - ease pressure for renters and property owners alike.

He declined Morning Report's invite to be interviewed.

Revenue Minister Simon Watts spoke to Corin Dann.
