Capital city councillors vote for higher density housing

Campaigners for more houses and bigger apartments in the capital are celebrating major changes to Wellington's zoning rules saying it will help tackle the city's housing crisis.

A majority of councillors have rejected recommendations by an independent panel and instead voted to shrink the city's protected character areas, cut heritage protection and allow high density housing near train lines.

The final say on the changes rests with the housing minister.
