Young chef competition canned due to lack of contestants

The New Zealand young chef of the year competition was set to be staged this weekend but it has been postponed for a year because of a lack of quality entries.

One of our leading chefs says it reflects the grim state of the industry, with many of the country's best young talent moving overseas.

MacLean Fraser, who would have been the head judge this weekend, is a 20-year career chef - nearly half of that time as executive chef at Wellington's Bolton Hotel.

He spoke to Morning Report.
