Greymouth mayor taking stand to shut down 'environmentally risky' dump

Greymouth mayor Tania Gibson says the council is taking a stand to shut down a dump she says is too environmentally risky.

The Grey District Council is calling on the West Coast Regional Council to revoke all resource consents for the Taylorville Resource Park in Coal Creek, near Greymouth.

The Environmental Protection Authority issued an abatement notice for the landfill, after an investigation found an unlined sediment pond was discharging contaminated water.

It's the latest in a series of complaints about the landfill, which is consented to take demolition waste and contaminated material including asbestos and coal-tar.

Gibson spoke to Corin Dann.
